The results are in, and there’s encouraging news for Texas public schools. The latest 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) scores reaffirm what many of us already know—when our schools are equipped with the right tools, our students rise to the challenge.

Texas 4th graders outperformed the national average in math, gaining two points since 2022. Even more notable, African American and Asian students in Texas saw 4-point gains, placing them first and second nationally among their peers. Students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds also showed significant progress, with a 5-point increase—another sign that targeted supports are making a difference.
And while 4th grade reading scores declined slightly—reflecting national trends—Texas English Learners continue to lead. In fact, English Learners in Texas ranked first in the nation in 8th grade reading and math and placed in the top five for 4th grade reading and math. That’s a powerful testament to the efforts of educators and support staff working with multilingual students every day.

The message is clear—our schools are making strides, but to sustain and build on this progress, we must invest in the tools, staffing, and interventions that support academic recovery at all levels. Texas students are capable of incredible things—and they deserve the resources to reach their full potential.
