Senator to hold hearings on end-of-course exams

BIG SPRING - If state Sen. Kel Seliger has his way, end-of-course exams would replace TAKS tests in Texas public schools.

Also during the event, Leslie Milder, who founded Friends of Texas Public Schools with her husband, Scott, two years ago, offered a positive message for teachers. Her three charges for instructors attending include:

  • Teachers should educate themselves about their profession and keep up with what is going on in Austin.
  • Vote. Be informed and know what's going on in the state Legislature. Milder said she hoped to see educators turn out in force at the polls.

    "Government is not just something that happens to us. We have to participate in it," she said.

  • Speak positively about education. Milder said educators are the first line of defense in combating negative media.

    "We are achieving great things in public education and we need to share that with people. We have to promote ourselves because no one will do it for us," Milder said.
